Dear Garfield CLC Families,

We are almost to winter break and 3 weeks away from the end of our first semester. There have been many events and activities to share with families, as well as upcoming events for your calendar.

We have been testing and retesting juniors and seniors with Ohio State Test make ups in order to meet graduation requirements. For Seniors, we just concluded our second Dream Day, which included review of their transcripts, credits, and state and local seals earned toward graduation.  We also heard the exciting announcement from Akron Promise who, along with Stark State, has offered to pay for college for Garfield CLC 2022-2023 seniors! We thank Akron Promise and Stark State for their support of our students. Students interested need to work with their counselor to meet requirements and application.

Our winter sports teams are underway. Bowling, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, and wrestling have all started their seasons. We encourage our student athletes to continue working hard in their sport and in the classroom. We encourage students and parents to come cheer on our Ram family.  As always, good sportsmanship is expected not only from our athletes, but also from our spectators. We encourage people in attendance to cheer on the team and refrain from yelling at referees, coaches or players. We want to keep the positive environment our student athletes and coaches deserve.

We held interim pickups December 1st where Stark State representatives worked with seniors to complete their FAFSA (student loan for college) and scholarship information. We thank our partners at Stark State who continue to support and encourage our Garfield seniors.

We are only a week away from semester exams, which will take place before winter break. Here is a link to the semester exam schedule. Exam schedules were also emailed to students. Students need to be present at the time of their exams. Make ups will only be allowed with a doctor note, or principal permission (in extreme circumstances).

In order for students to be successful, they must attend school daily, attend all of their classes, and be on-time. There are a few students that are choosing to skip multiple classes, causing distractions to the learning environment. We have conducted hall sweeps and are increasing disciplinary consequences for students with repeated tardiness and truancies from class. We are also disciplining students that not only participate, but actively encourage fighting. Students that choose to encourage the act of fighting or record the fights will be considered aiding and abetting a fight, which will result in out of school suspension. As always, our goal is to provide a safe, affirming learning environment with the focus on learning for all students at Garfield CLC.

When we return from break, to go along with Akron Public School guidelines and for safety and security and dress code, we will be addressing students that are out of dress code. This includes ski masks, hats, hoods, shower caps, tank tops, midriff shirt, dew rags and sunglasses. Anything that disrupts the learning environment or is a safety issue falls under the dress code policy. The district policy for Akron Public Schools dress code can be found here:  https://www.akronschools.com/programs/dress_code  We are preparing students with college and career readiness, this includes following dress code expectations for the workplace.  This is also important for school safety, to identify students who are in the building and students that may be causing damage to the building.  Administration will be holding class meetings during intervention time next week to share expectations moving forward after winter break.

We will continue to work with families and students to continue to keep Garfield a safe, respectful, productive and enjoyable learning community where all scholars learn and grow.  I look forward to our continued work together to help our students make responsible decisions in and out of school.  Please have a conversation with your student about why it is important to respect and take care of valuable resources that have been designed and created for their benefit and wellbeing.

Winter break will start Thursday December 22nd. Students will return Friday January 6th, 2023. We wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe winter break!.
